In many jurisdictions, the regulations governing the display of lights on vehicles are based on their intended purpose and the potential for confusion with other road users. The reason white and amber lights should not be displayed in front of a vehicle or equipment on a highway is primarily to prevent confusion with other types of vehicles and traffic signals.

White lights are commonly used for headlights and are expected to be at the front of most vehicles. However, amber lights are often associated with caution and are used on service or emergency vehicles when they are conveying a specific warning or need for drivers to be aware of a situation. Displaying white or amber lights in front of a standard vehicle can mislead drivers into thinking the vehicle is involved in emergency services or has a different status than it truly does.

Red lights in front of a vehicle often denote a vehicle that is stopping, and green lights can be designated for specific traffic purposes or vehicles. Blue lights are commonly used for law enforcement vehicles. Thus, these colors have defined roles that further underscore why white and amber lights are not appropriate in front of a vehicle on the highway, as they can create ambiguity regarding the vehicle's intentions or status.
